The year 2022 started on an optimistic note with much-needed relief from the carnage done by the bears in the month of December.
The buying further intensified as we marched to the mid of the month, wherein the benchmark index inched closer to its lifetime high at
18350 odd zone. However, the weakness across the global bourses dampened the sentiments and a substantial sell-off was seen for two
consecutive weeks that dragged the index lower towards 16800 before anyone could realize. Fortunately, some smart recovery was seen
in the last two days of the expiry that placed the index tad below the 17200 mark.
Despite wide swings in the benchmark index; we hardly saw any relevant change in open interest activity series on series. The banking
index was indeed a savior as it managed to conclude the action packed series with more than eight percent gains but unfortunately
bullish bets were missing. Rollover for Nifty stood at 75%, lower than the three month average. For BankNifty, rollover is slightly lower
than the averages at 84%. Stronger hands continued their selling streak in equities as they sold to the tune of Rs. 32,677 cores till date in
the month of January. In index futures, they added massive shorts resulting their ‘Long Short Ratio’ declining to 33%.; this clearly hints
they are short heavy and hence in case of any positivity, the covering of these positions can’t be ruled out in February series. We
advocate traders to trade with a positive bias until Nifty respects 16800-17000 zones.
